High-Tech Gründerfonds invests in CCI – Custom Cells Itzehoe GmbH –the future of energy storage systems

August 28, 2013

Custom Cells Itzehoe GmbH (CCI) manufactures electrode foils, rechargeable accumulators and battery systems for a multitude of attractive niche markets for which there are currently no (or merely unsatisfactory) solutions. The company located in the German State of Schleswig-Holstein is now receiving fresh capital from High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) to support the continued growth of the company.

Custom Cells Itzehoe GmbH produces individual energy storage systems based on lithium accumulator technology that are strongly tailored to their specific use. This special cell construction technology makes it possible even for sophisticated niche applications such as prosthetics, weather stations, satellites, drill head sensors, unmanned underwater vehicles or concept cars to use the advantages of modern lithium battery technology. State-of-the-art coating and production systems are used to manufacture plug-in energy storage systems, but also intermediate products such as electrode foils or lithium accumulators that are sought after by system integrators or in the field of R&D. The CCI platform can also be used for future battery solutions with innovative materials.  Custom Cells Itzehoe is capable of uniquely adapting the performance features and specifications of the energy storage systems to the area of use at the chemical, cell and energy storage system level.  For example, the cells can be optimized for a high level of intrinsic safety or shock and shake resistance. CCI offers vacuum- or high pressure-tolerant cells (tested up to hydrostatic 500 bar) as well as amagnetic cells. These special battery systems are therefore particularly well suited for applications under extreme conditions in the oil and gas industry, in the field of medical technology, in the aerospace industry or for specialized measuring devices.

“Thanks to the financing round, Custom Cells Itzehoe is set up well to further optimize the production processes and to speed up the company’s growth. In addition to hiring more personnel to bring in more orders, we are also planning to expand the technology applications, for example to the field of super capacitors”, so Torge Thönnessen and Leopold König, CEOs of Custom Cells Itzehoe about the participation of HTGF.  Ron Winkler, Investment Manager of HTGF, explains: “Thanks to the flexibility of Custom Cells Itzehoe when it comes to material selection and battery design and due to their extensive process know-how, the company provides proprietary solutions for attractive niche applications.”
