Focus on Start-up Pitch Day: BVMed, Earlybird, High-Tech Gründerfonds and BIOCOM publish “MedTech Radar 10”

March 28, 2018

Strategic co-operation between medical technology firms and start-ups could foster more innovation within the industry and be a decisive factor in the success of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). This is particularly true in light of the increasingly complex regulatory market environment through the new EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) which came into effect almost a year ago. Which advantages start-ups could bring in with regard to this situation and what founders, investors as well as established medical technology companies can expect from the Start-up Pitches at “MedTech Radar Live 2018” is highlighted in the 10th edition of the joint media service “MedTech Radar”, published by the German Medical Technology Association (BVMed), Earlybird Venture Capital, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and BIOCOM AG.

The current MedTech Radar is available for download in German or English

Since the EU MDR entered into force in May 2017, small to medium-sized medical technology companies in particular have to spend most of their resources on handling and rearranging the regulatory requirements. But how can the innovation capacities of the sector be preserved despite this environment? Which potential do strategic co-operations with start-ups offer? Which aspects of the medical technology market should be considered by founders with respect to the development of new products and services?

The current edition of “MedTech Radar” provides a preview of the Start-up Pitch Day “MedTech Radar Live 2018” on 16th May 2018 in Cologne. The call for applications is open until 31st March. Particularly wanted are smart ideas with a focus on Digital Health, Services, Rehabilitation, Patient Care & Big Data. The event offers 10 start-ups the opportunity to present their business ideas to the public, receive direct feedback from an expert jury and establish valuable contacts with the medical technology industry, with statutory health insurance experts as well as investors and other sector stakeholders. In addition, the 10 business models will be published in the 11th issue of the “MedTech Radar”.

Among the jury members of the Start-up Pitch Day is Marc Michel, CEO of endoprosthesis specialist and BVMed member company Peter Brehm GmbH. He highlights: “The industry is currently facing a multitude of challenges. Individual companies, in particular small to medium-sized enterprises, do not have the resources to manage these alone.” In an interview in the “MedTech Radar” he talks about his experiences with start-ups and why the industry should co-operate with founders in the future.

“MedTech Radar Live 2018” is backed by the German Medical Technology Association (BVMed), the investors Earlybird Venture Capital and High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), BARMER and the medical technology journal medtech zwo. The event’s patron is the Minister for Economics, Innovation, Digitisation and Energy in North Rhine-Westphalia, Dr. Andreas Pinkwart. Another local partner on board is the investor NRW.Bank.
