High-Tech Gründerfonds, Bamac GmbH, and business angel Markus Plümer invest in animal feed start-up PerformaNat

Berlin-based start-up PerformaNat specialises in the development of livestock feed additives with a positive effect on animal health. To drive forward the development of new, innovative ingredients, PerformaNat GmbH closed a seven-figure financing round, which includedHigh-Tech Gründerfonds, Bamac GmbH, and business angel Markus Plümer.

Berlin-based start-up PerformaNat develops animal-feed additives that optimise the intake of nutrients from animal feed. PerformaNat´s goal is to improve the utilisation of animal-feed protein, prevent various illnesses through improved nutrition, and curb emissions of gases harmful to the environment. In particular, focus has been placed on the use of plant-based agents that support the natural metabolic process and strengthen animals’ immune systems.

The company has already licensed its first product to an international sales partner in the veterinary pharmaceuticals industry. This product – a feed additive for dairy cows – is already available on the market. The underlying technology was developed over the course of several years of research in collaboration with the veterinary medicine department of the Freie Universität Berlin. PerformaNat´s product developments are based on scientific findings from in-vitro and in-vivo studies carried out by founders Dr. Julia Rosendahl, Hannah Braun, and Katharina Schrapers within the framework of the EXIST Transfer of Research Grant Program of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Following its implementation into the company’s first product, PerformaNat will now integrate this technology into further fields of application.

With their seven-digit investment, High-Tech Gründerfonds, Bamac GmbH, and business angel Markus Plümer are tapping into a promising growth sector. The overall animal-feed market was worth approximately EUR 15 billion in 2015 and is projected to hit the EUR 20 billion mark in 2021. The investment allows PerformaNat to conduct the next wave of studies for the development of additional new products.

Frank Hensel, Investment Manager at High-Tech Gründerfonds, says: “PerformaNat’s founders have been able to turn the scientific findings of a PhD thesis into a product and take them to market launch with the help of this funding.” The investment by HTGF, Bamac,m and Mr Plümer will now give PerformaNat the opportunity to grow and expand its their product portfolio.”

Business angel Markus Plümer adds: “Based on proprietary R&D, PerformaNat’s business model is extremely flexible and scalable, allowing product out-licencing to major veterinary and animal-feed firms. At the same time, physical operating principle used in the PerformaNat process, which is based on plant-based materials, has the potential to address three megatrends in livestock farming in a remarkable way: effective and economical food production with a sustainable improvement in animal health and lower ammoniac emissions.”
