Kiwigrid cooperates with Gemalto to further develop and commercialize new features for Kiwigrid’s innovative high security Smart Grid as a Service Platform.

January 6, 2015

Kiwigrid, a Dresden, Germany-based Smart Grid start-up is cooperating with Gemalto to further develop and commercialize new features for Kiwigrid’s innovative high security Smart Grid as a Service Platform.

Gemalto will specifically support Kiwigrid to fulfill BSI (German state office for information security) security requirements for Smart Metering Gateways (SMGW) & Gateway Administrators (SMGWA). The collaboration will ensure Kiwigrid’s readiness for the large-scale rollout of highly secure Service Management Gateways during the German Smart Meter rollout in 2015.

Kiwigrid’s Smart Meter Gateways and Gateway Administrators will conform with all State rules and regulations and will provide all necessary functionalities for Smart Meters. Additional to the requirements of the state regulator the SMGW and the Smart Grid as a Service Platform will provide Energy suppliers with a Marketplace for energy applications which will enable a variety of value-added services such as facility management.

The Smart Meter rollout in Germany is planned for 2015. With the Smart Metering Gateway and the turn-key Smart Grid as a Service Platform, energy suppliers receive a SaaS-Solution that meets the current requirements of the BSI-TR 03109 standard. The main advantage of this solution is the easy adaption: without significant investments in own developments innovative energy suppliers can get active immediately in the areas of Smart Grid and value-added services.

Gemalto is developing the BSI-compliant security module for the SMGW that is being certified according to the demanding requirements of the international Common Criteria Standard Level 4+. Kiwigrid currently integrates this module in the existing platform. The clear identification of the final products enables end customers, installers, and OEMs an even more secure use of Kiwigrid’s existing value-added services and develop own services independently. Existing services, such as the management of power generation (PV, CHP, heat pump), learning algorithms for consumption- and production forecast, as well as the Smart Management of energy consumption are just a few examples to mention. Furthermore, the management of virtual power plants with the ability to trade at the European Energy Exchange (EEX) is already possible. Direct marketing, as well as the integration of balancing energy, can be used to regulate and be displayed by apps.

However, the platform’s initial use is the Smart Metering. According to the German Energy Industry Act, old meters have to be replaced by digital and data secured meters, which have an interface to SMGWs. By 2032, the German Federal Ministry of Economics estimates the demand of Smart Metering systems and meters up to 50 million units.

Smart Grid as a Service
By providing integrated communication and management of decentralized energy facilities, the Kiwigrid Platform enables a significant increase of the energy efficiency for households, companies and the industry. The Smart Metering Gateway supports distribution network operators and service providers with highly secured data of producers and consumers. The “internet of things” is becoming real this way.
“We expect a strategic future market with Smart Energy infrastructures and we highly appreciate Kiwigrid as a strong partner, as they are already leading in implementing the development of technology in Germany nowadays”, says Thomas Weisshaupt, Senior Manager for Business Development Smart Energy at Gemalto M2M. “For Gemalto, this cooperation and the resulting solution represents a role model not just for the national but also for the international market.”

Dr. Carsten Bether, founder and CEO of Kiwigrid: “We are delighted that we can offer high security on our Smart Grid Application together with Gemalto. The solution will not just be available for equipment manufacturers and energy suppliers promptly – it will furthermore be one of the most important components in the future technology development.”
Kiwigrid and Gemalto are going to present the Smart Grid Application Platform and the Smart Metering Gateway jointly at the E-World 2015.
