Measurement instrumentation specialist for wind turbines closes financing round for further scaling of business

August 27, 2013

UnternehmerTUM Fund, High-Tech Gründerfonds, Bayern Kapital and Dr. Schulze Consulting invest further in fos4X GmbH. fos4X has established itself as a provider of innovative solutions to increase the efficiency of wind turbines.

fos4X is using the advantages of fiber optic technology to make wind turbines smarter and wind energy more cost-effective. The company developed solutions to measure bending moments of wind turbine rotor blades.

fos4X has become the leading provider of fiber optic technology for the wind industry. The proprietary fiber optic technology improves monitoring of technical structures and constructions especially those made of new materials such as fiber reinforced plastics and resins.

Dr. Ingo Potthof of UnternehmerTUM Fund, the lead-investor of this round, asserts: “fos4X has grown outstandingly since our first investment. Using the new capital we will finance the strong growth and the extension of the company’s product portfolio. Dr. Gisbert Schulze, former CEO of SSB Wind Systems GmbH and first client of fos4X, explains: “The technology and the team convinced me from the very beginning. The first attempts on a wind turbine were very promising. At this point I decided to be a part of this as a business angel and contribute to the success of fos4X.”

Dr. Guillem Sague, Investment Manager at High-Tech Gründerfonds, explains: “For years fiber optical measurement was considered unsuitable for industrial applications. fos4X has convinced international manufacturers of wind turbines of the advantages of its technology.”

Wolfgang Härtl, Bayern Kapital, about the investment: “The founders of fos4X were able to successfully prove the capability of their technology during the last year. We are very happy to further support the company in its growth with our second round of financing.”

Dr. Lars Hoffmann, CEO of fos4X, predicts: “Until end of 2020 three out of four wind turbines will be equipped with smart sensor technology. This makes it possible to realize new concepts for wind energy generation and helps to tap large efficiency potentials along the value chain.”

fos4X
fos4X develops and sells monitoring and control solutions for wind turbines. The technology is based on their innovative fiber optic measurement for rotor blades plus their deep knowledge in wind generation.
