With seed finance to a medical product ready for the market: Delphi Optics GmbH starts marketing its burns diagnosis system
March 31, 2010
With the seed investment totalling EUR 750,000, which the Lübeck-based medical technology business obtained from High-Tech Gründerfonds, KSV GmbH and Mittelständische Beteiligungsgesellschaft Schleswig Holstein GmbH (MBG), Delphi Optics has developed its first product to readiness for the market.
The CS-Cam.burn optical system for diagnosing the depth of burns matured from a lab prototype to a pre-production model during the seed phase. Six well-known hospitals (Unfallklinikum Marzahn in Berlin, AKH Wien (Vienna), Klinikum Nürnberg-Süd, BG-Kliniken Bergmannstrost in Halle, UK-SH Lübeck and Kinderkrankenhaus auf der Bult, Hanover) were signed up as partners during the concurrent clinical trial phase. Their clinical application trials demonstrated that CS-Cam.burn enables a gap to be closed in determining the depth of burns: With a high level of reliability the system reproducibly recognises different skin conditions (degrees of burn) and thereby for the first time enables not only objective and documentable diagnosis, but also early determination of the therapy plan, which plays an important role especially in the treatment of children.
“Colleagues involved in the treatment of burns showed us that our product for diagnosing burns represents a tremendous advance. With this method it now becomes possible for the first time to determine both the area and depth of the burn,” says Dr Werner Eisenbeiss, inventor of the technology and managing director of Delphi Optics GmbH, in emphasizing the camera’s added value for patients and doctors. Andreas Prause, managing director of Delphi Optics GmbH, adds: “The feedback from the symposium at which we presented the camera to the trade was exceptionally positive, which is why we are confident of being able to use this momentum as we start to market the system. Our small, effective team of engineers and sales staff has done a great job in this respect.”
“We are convinced above all by the medical benefit of this diagnostic system and are supporting Delphi Optics’ team to the best of our ability with their market launch. This also includes the raising of further capital, which is currently underway and Delphi Optics needs to set up its own distribution capacity as well as for further growth,” says Dr Caroline Fichtner, Senior Investment Manager at High-Tech Gründerfonds, in underscoring the investors’ commitment.
About Delphi Optics:
Delphi Optics GmbH develops and distributes automatic, optical classification systems for medical applications. These systems are based on specific, multispectral or hyperspectral image-guided measuring techniques combined with a proprietary, intelligent, knowledge-based image data processing method. In addition to the entry product for determining the depth of burns, future areas of application for CS-Cam.burn will include objective assessment of different types of injury.
